About the journal

Advances in Applied Probability, published by the Applied Probability Trust, contains reviews and expository papers in applied probability, as well as mathematical and scientific papers of interest to probabilists, letters to the editor and a section devoted to stochastic geometry and statistical applications.

Instructions to Authors

Scope of the journals

Papers published in Journal of Applied Probability (JAP) may be either:

  • research papers not exceeding 20 printed pages, or
  • short communications of a few printed pages in the nature of notes or brief accounts of work in progress
  • Letters to the Editor relating specifically to articles that have previously appeared in JAP.

Papers published in Advances in Applied Probability (AAP) can be:

  • review papers
  • longer research papers in applied probability, which may include expository material
  • expository papers on branches of mathematics of interest to probabilists
  • papers outlining areas in the biological, physical, social and technological sciences in which probability models can usefully be developed
  • papers in applied probability presented at conferences that do not publish their proceedings
  • Letters to the Editor on any appropriate topic in applied probability
  • contributions relating to stochastic geometry and statistical applications to appear in the SGSA section of AAP.

Publishing policy

Research papers are published in both JAP and AAP, with longer papers typically appearing in AAP. However, assignation of papers between the two journals is made by the Editor on an issue-by-issue basis. A submission to Applied Probability is considered as a submission to either journal. In addition, JAP publishes short communications of a few printed pages in the nature of notes and letters specifically related to papers that have appeared in JAP. Review papers and papers in stochastic geometry and statistical applications are published in AAP.

Fifty offprints of each paper will be provided free, with additional offprints available at cost.

Papers submitted to the Applied Probability journals are considered on the understanding that they have not been published previously and are not under consideration by another publication. Accepted papers will not be published elsewhere without the written permission of the Trust. Submitted papers should be in English. It is the author's responsibility to ensure an acceptable standard of language, and a paper failing to meet this requirement may go back to the author for rewriting before being sent out for review.

There are normally no charges to authors unless their paper has very unusual production requirements.

Requirements for papers

Papers must state the names and postal and email addresses of all authors, and should also include:

  • a short abstract of 410 lines giving a non-mathematical description of the subject matter and results
  • a list of keywords detailing the contents
  • a list of classifications according to the 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification scheme (http://www.ams.org/msc/)

(Letters to the Editor need not include these.)

To assist authors in writing papers in the Applied Probability style, they may use the LaTeX class file aptpub.cls, along with the template file template.tex, and the APT bibliography style file, apt.bst. We also recommend that authors consult the document guide.pdf, which explains how to use the Applied Probability LaTeX class file. Use of this class file is not a condition of submission, but will considerably increase the speed at which papers are processed for press.

Papers may be submitted as hard copy or as electronic files (we recommend sending hard copy as back-up). All submissions will be acknowledged on receipt.

Hard copy: Send two copies of the paper, at least one of which should be double-spaced. All submissions must be accompanied by a covering letter stating the full postal addresses and affiliation of all authors.

Send all submissions to:

Executive Editor
Applied Probability
School of Mathematics and Statistics
The University of Sheffield
Sheffield S3 7RH
UK

Electronic submission: Email a double-spaced PostScript™ (.ps) or portable document format (.pdf) file, not exceeding 1 Mb. The files must be clearly identified by name in a separate covering message, and the full title of the paper and all author names must be clearly stated. The address for all email submissions is

apt@sheffield.ac.uk

The subject line must contain the word "Submission".

We recommend that authors should also submit at least one hard copy as above.
