About the journal

The aim of the European Journal of Cancer Care is to provide a medium for communicating comprehensive, multi-professional cancer care across Europe and internationally. It publishes peer-reviewed papers, reviews, reports, features and news, and provides a means of recording lively debate and exchange of ideas. The Editor welcomes original contributions from all health professionals working in the fields of:
The journal has been developed to provide a forum for multi-professional debate and the reporting of rigorous research within the field of cancer, its treatment and care. With health care becoming even more complex, clear and sound communication and collaboration across the disciplines is vital.
The journal equally welcomes original research, reviews and correspondence from individuals whose first language is not English.

Papers are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere. On acceptance, papers become the copyright of the Journal and all accepted papers should be accompanied by a copyright assignment form. To access this form please click here. Manuscript Style
The typescript should be on A4 paper on one side only, double spaced with a wide margin on either side. Manuscripts should usually be between 2000 and 5000 words. In the case of Research in Brief and Clinical Notes, these should normally not exceed 500 words.
Disks On acceptance of their paper, authors should submit a disk of the final version (together with three hard-copy printouts). The disk and hard copy must be exact final versions; if different, the disk version will be used. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph. Turn the hyphenation option off. Always enclose a hard copy of figures and tables. Disks will not be returned to authors.
Title page This should contain a concise title of the article, names and qualifications of authors, their affiliations and full postal address, and the fax and telephone numbers of the author to whom correspondence can be addressed.
Abstract This should be on a separate page and should not exceed 200 words. Where appropriate, authors should cover the following areas: objective, design, setting, respondents/subjects, intervention, or description of the variables under study, main outcome measures if relevant, results, conclusions. The abstract should be followed by up to six key words.
Main text This should begin on a separate page, and include an introduction, methods, results, and a discussion section. Where possible, authors should avoid using abbreviations and footnotes. The use of non-discriminatory language is encouraged and spellings should conform with that used in the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English.
References These should be in the Harvard style. In the text the authors names should be cited followed by the date of publication, e.g. Smith & Parker (1993). Where there are three or more authors, the first authors name followed by et al. should be written in the text, e.g. Williams et al. (1993). The reference list should be prepared on a separate sheet, listed in alphabetical order.
The references should list authors surnames and initials, date of publication, title of article, name of journal or book, volume number or edition, editors, publisher and place of publication. In the case of an article, page numbers should be included routinely, page numbers from books need only be included when referencing direct quotes or paraphrases. Unpublished work should only be cited in the text. Only references to articles genuinely in press should be included in the reference list.

Illustrations These should be referred to in the text as figures using Arabic numbers, e.g. Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc., in order of appearance. Each figure should be marked on the back with its appropriate number, together with the name(s) of the author(s) and title of the paper. Photographs should be unmounted glossy prints in black and white, labelling should be clearly indicated on an overlay or photocopy. Line drawings should be on a separate sheet with lettering (no less than 4 mm high for 50% reduction) on an overlay or photocopy, dot matrix illustrations are not permitted. Each figure should have a legend clearly describing it; the legends should be grouped on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. Tables These should include only essential data. Each table must be typewritten on a separate sheet and should include a clear title. Tables should be numbered in the same way as figures and listed on a separate page at the back of the manuscript.
Acknowledgements These should be brief and must include references to sources of financial and logistical support. The author(s) should clear the copyright of material they wish to reproduce from other sources and this should be acknowledged. It will be assumed that authors have conformed to the normal ethical aspects of investigations.
Units Measurements where appropriate must be in SI units. Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (Royal Society of Medicine, 1988) is a useful guide.
Features and Review Papers These are actively encouraged. Prospective authors should initially discuss their proposals with the Editor. Features should not normally exceed 2000 words, Reviews should not exceed 5000 words.
Clinical Notes Brief descriptions and commentaries (approximately 500 words) on the practice of cancer treatment and care are welcome. These should contain no more than three references and one table or figure.
Research in Brief Short reports (approximately 500 words) on research related to cancer (completed or ongoing) may be submitted. These should be concise, and presented under three to four subheadings (e.g. aims, methods, findings) with a maximum of three references but no tables or figures.
Letters to the Editor Letters should be succinct and must relate to article that have been published in the journal. They must be signed by all signatories. The Editor reserves the right to shorten letters if necessary. Three copies should be sent to the Editor. Proofs of letters will not be sent to the authors.
Page Proofs These must be returned to the Production Editor within 3 days of receipt. Only typographical errors and other essential changes can be made at this stage. Major text alterations cannot be accepted.
Proofs will be sent via e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs.
Offprints Twenty-five offprints will be sent free of charge to the corresponding author. Additional copies can be ordered with the return of proofs
