ISSN: 1735-1502; e. ISSN: 1735-5249) is the Official Journal of Iranian Society of Asthma and Allergy, supported by Immunology, Asthma and Allergy Research Institute and published by Tehran University of Medical Sciences.   Publication of articles in immunology has surprisingly taken place at a very high rate for decades, and there is as yet no sign that research in this interesting field of human endeavor will subside in the near future. Interest as well as research activities in the academic forums have also grown considerably.   The present Journal will try to establish a medium of communication between researchers, clinicians, scientists and post-graduate students in Asia and in the world at large. We would like to consider this journal an international publication rather than a journal attributed to a particular geographical region.   The Editorial Board of the Journal is well aware that there is a severe shortage of journals in Asia to encompass the basic and clinical research taking place in the field of immunology, and hopes that publication of such a Journal would be welcomed by researchers and academics in the universities and related centers of all over the world. Instructions to Authors Instruction to Authors The Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (IJAAI), a scientific and research journal, seeks to publish original papers, selected review articles, case reports, and other articles of special interest related to the fields of asthma, allergy and immunology. The Journal is an official publication of the Iranian Society of Asthma and Allergy (ISAA), which is supported by Immunology, Asthma and Allergy Research Institute (IAARI) and published by Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). The Journal seeks to provide its readers with the highest quality materials published through a process of careful peer reviews and editorial comments. All papers are published in English. Manuscript Submission Authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts electronically. For further information, please see below or e-mail the editorial office (ijaai@hbi.ir). If you are unable to submit your manuscript in this way, please send four complete copies of the text, tables and figures; together with a disk containing a word-processed file of the manuscript, to: Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Children Medical Center, No. 62, Dr. Gharib St, Keshavarz Blvd, P.O. Box: 13145-955, Tehran 14194, Iran E-mail: ijaai@hbi.ir Manuscript Preparation Submit four complete copies of the manuscript and a computer disk. Manuscript should typed double-space with one-inch margins on A4 paper. All tables, figure legends, and references, must be typewritten with double spacing. All submitted components of the manuscript are non-returnable, unless a special arrangement is made in advance with the Editors. Arrange the manuscript with the following components: (1) Title page, (2) Abstract, (3) Introduction, (4) Materials/Patients and Methods, (5) Results, (6) Discussion, (7) References, (8) Acknowledgment, (9) Tables, (10) Figure Legends and Figures. In addition, the editor requires authors to provide a cover letter in which they specifically state their written assurance of the following: (1) The submitted paper is an original and unpublished work in which the listed authors have all made important contributions; (2) The authors have not submitted the same material or portions thereof for consideration of publication in any other journal for which a decision regarding publication is pending, and no such additional submission will be made before completion of the review process by IJAAI; (3) The editors do not consider the submission of abstracts of oral or poster presentations for publication in other Journals to prohibit publication in IJAAI. Likewise, submission of letters to the editor, preliminary communications, or brief communications of small portions of the material to other journals does not necessarily prohibit publication in IJAAI. If such a previous publication has occurred, the authors must make reference to the publication within the text and include a citation in the reference of the submitted manuscript; (4) The authors must further guarantee that, once their material has been accepted for publication by the Journal, they will not make submission of the same material or portions thereof to another journal before publication in IJAAI. The editors also require that the authors be responsible for the linguistic and grammatical editing of manuscripts before submission to the Journal. Any manuscripts determined to be improperly prepared or edited will be returned to the authors without review by the editors. Rejected manuscripts will be held for a limited period of time and then destroyed. All authors should adhere to the following instructions for submission of manuscripts to IJAAI. Cover Letter The authors should provide the assurances listed above. In addition, authors are welcomed to suggest three to five referees for their paper as well as their choice of the most appropriate Associate Editors, as listed in the editorial board page of the Journal; however, the editors cannot guarantee assignment of a particular reviewer to a paper. Any unusual circumstances surrounding the research or explanations for deviation from standard procedures or format should be explained in the cover letter. Abbreviations When using abbreviations, write the full name of the abbreviated item followed by the abbreviation in parentheses at the point of first mention of the abbreviation within the body of the manuscript: e.g., "cell mediated immunity (CMI)". Do not use abbreviations in the abstract or title of the manuscript. Abbreviations may be used in figures and tables, but such abbreviations must be explained in the figure legend or a footnote to the table. Title Page The title page should contain the following information: (1) the full title of the manuscript, not to exceed 120 characters. No abbreviations are acceptable in the full title. If the work involves the use of an experimental model, the animal species involved must be included in the title. (2) The full names of all authors. Authors should be limited to those individuals who contributed in an important manner to the study design, data collection and analysis, or writing of the paper. (3) The department and institution where work was performed, as well as the affiliations of the individual authors. (4) Grant support, indicating the source of any financial support for the study. (5) The name and address of the author responsible for correspondence. Include an e-mail address. (6) A shortened version of the title that is 45 characters or less to be used as a running title. Original Articles Scientific articles should conform to the usual structure of abstract, introduction, materials/patients and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, tables, and legends for figures. Each component should begin on a new page. Number the pages starting with the title page. Abstract The abstract must be limited to 250 words. Do not use abbreviations, footnotes or references in the body of the abstract. Include a brief description of the goal, materials and methods, finding, and conclusion of the study. Three to nine keywords for indexing should be given by the author(s) together with the abstract. They should be placed in alphabetical order and, when possible, adjusted to the medical subject headings of Index Medicus. Introduction, Materials/Patients and Methods, Results, and Discussion Introduction: containing the reasons for doing the work; Methods: sufficient information must be included to permit repetition of experimental work. Patients and Methods is used in the clinical sciences articles and Materials and Methods is used in the basic and laboratory sciences articles; Results: data and findings of research which should be given concisely; the use of tables and figures to illustrate the same results will only rarely be allowed; Discussion: the presentation of results should be separated from a discussion of their significance; this section should not repeat results; Include within the body of the text a description of the ethical guidelines that were followed for human and animal studies. If appropriate, provide citation of institutional review by human or animal research committees. Also describe any hazardous procedures or chemicals involved in the studies and what precautions were taken to avoid injury to subjects or investigators. Within the Methods section, provide a brief but complete description of the statistical methods used including which tests were used for analysis of which variables. Drugs, medication, or other material should be listed as generic items. If brand names are used, they should be placed after the generic name in parenthesis with the manufacturer's name, city, and state or country. Restrict all comments and discussion to the Discussion section. Acknowledgement Besides personal acknowledgement, sources of financial support should be mentioned in this section, if required. Try to avoid using abstracts as references. Unpublished observations, including personal communications, may not be used as references except for written communications, which may be referenced within parentheses in the text with the permission of the cited person. Articles or books accepted for publication but not yet published may be included as references with the name of the journal or publisher and the addition of (in press). Tables Each table should be typewritten with double spacing on a separate page and numbered in order of citation in the text with Arabic numerals. Each table should have a concise heading that makes it comprehensible without reference to the text of the article. Use horizontal lines only at the top and bottom of the table and between column headings and the body of the table. Use no vertical lines. Explain any nonstandard abbreviations in a footnote to the table. Figures Figures must be submitted in quadruplicate in a format suitable for direct reproduction in the Journal. Appropriate formats include glossy prints of photographs, high-resolution (300 dpi or greater) laser printer output, or original artwork. Each figure should be identified on the back by the first author' s name and Figure number in pencil. There will be a charge for publication of color Figures. Unless a special arrangement is made in advance, submitted materials will not be returned to authors. The editors and publisher reserve the right to reject illustrations or figures based upon poor quality of submitted materials. Brief Communications Brief Communications (of no more than 2000 words and two tables and/or figures) will be considered for publication on an accelerated schedule. In the handling of all manuscripts for publication, the editors and the associate editors will strive to provide the most rapid turnaround possible in the review process. Authors may request rapid review of material felt to be of critical importance to the field. The request must state clearly why the authors believe rapid review is warranted and must be submitted to the editors in written form at the time of manuscript submission. Manuscripts accepted by the editors for rapid review will be published in the next scheduled issue of the Journal or at the editors' discretion. Manuscripts submitted for rapid communication that require extensive revision will be rejected and the authors given the opportunity to resubmit the articles for regular publication. Review Articles The Journal welcomes review articles covering basic or clinical allergy, asthma, and immunology that are likely to be of interest to the broad readership of the Journal. Case Reports Short reports of clinical interest and brief individual case reports on unusual interest are welcomed. Letters to the Editor Letters of opinion about articles published in the IJAAI and other current topics or short reports of clinical interest are accepted for consideration for publication. These should not exceed 800 words and one table and/or figure. These should list no more than ten references. Letters should be typewritten with double spacing throughout, including references. The editor reserves the right to edit such letters and to use his discretion in their selection for publication. Ethics and Consent Authors must state that the protocol for the research project has been approved by a suitably constituted Ethics Committee of the institution within which the work was undertaken and that it conforms to the provisions of the Declaration of Helsinki in 1995 (as revised in Edinburgh 2000). Copyright The Agreement is made with Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (IJAAI). The Agreement is for the Article submitted by Author for publication IJAAI. To enable publishing the Article in the Journal, the ownership of copyright must be established. The author should read and complete the form and return one copy to the journal office. There are explanatory notes to this Agreement, which also form part of the Agreement. In consideration of the publication of the Article in the Journal, authors hereby warrant and undertake: a. that the Article is an original work, has not been published before and is not being considered for publication elsewhere in its final form either in printed or electronic form. b. that author has obtained permission from the copyright holder to reproduce in the Article (in all media including print and electronic form) material not owned by author, and that author has acknowledged the source; c. that this Article contains no violation of any existing copyright or other third party right or any material of an obscene, indecent or otherwise unlawful nature and that to the best of my knowledge this Article does not infringe the rights of others; d. that author will indemnify and keep indemnified the Editors, Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology against all claims and expenses (including legal costs and expenses) arising from any breach of this warranty and the other warranties on my behalf in this Agreement; e. that in the case of a multi-authored Article author has obtained copyright assignment from all co-authors, in writing, and authorization to enter into this Agreement on their behalf and that all co-authors have read and agreed the above warranties; In consideration of the publication of the Article in the Journal, authors hereby assign to Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology copyright for the full period of copyright and all renewals, extensions, revisions and revivals together with all accrued rights of action throughout the world in any form and in any language (including all media, both now known or later developed). Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology may assign its rights under this Agreement. Notwithstanding the above, authors retain all proprietary rights other than copyright, such as patent and trade mark rights and rights to any process or procedure described in the Article. In signing the copyright form, the signee asserts that any authors not signing have authorized the signee to do so on their behalf, and that the manuscript submitted has been approved by these authors in the form in which it has been submitted, and that the warranties given above have been read and agreed by all authors. Note: The manuscript cannot be processed for publication until the publisher has received this signed form. If the manuscript is not published by IJAAI, this letter will not take effect. Proofs Proofs will be sent to the author wherever possible and should be returned within 72 hours of receipt, preferably by e-mail. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors. The publisher will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive e-mail or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete. Publication Charge A publication charge of $70 (300,000 Rials for Iranian) will be levied on the corresponding author of each paper accepted for publication, irrespective of its length. When payment has been received, the corresponding author will receive one year personal subscription to Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Payment of the page charge is required, but is not a condition for publication, since the decision for publication is made on the basis of scientific aspects only. The charge will be waived if the corresponding author already takes a personal subscription to the Journal. The editorial committee reserves the right to charge authors for extra costs for English editing, if necessary. Reprints The corresponding author of each paper will receive fifteen offprints free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue should be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Manuscripts on Disk You should supply a word processor disk along with the four copies of your manuscript. The label of the diskette should indicate the title of the paper, the first author' s name, and the software and hardware used. Diskettes should be in either PC/DOS or Apple Macintosh format, preferably 3 1/2 inch (1.4 MB). The data should be saved in a pure text format (ASCII) as well as in the format of the word processing program used to prepare the manuscript. Acceptable formats that can be used for Figures, Tables, etc..., are as follows: Adobe (.pdf), Excel (.xls), Powerpoint (.ppt), Word (.doc or .rtf), and/or Jpeg (.jpg) formats.
